IndusInd General Insurance Company Limited is a general insurance company based in Mumbai, India — formerly known as Reliance General Insurance Company Limited. Here's a quick overview:
Background
Founded on 17 August 2000, originally as part of the Anil Ambani-led Reliance Group.
It changed its name from Reliance General Insurance Company to IndusInd General Insurance in late October 2025, following its acquisition/rebrand under the Hinduja Group, which also owns IndusInd Bank.
The company obtained its license to operate in general insurance from the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) in October 2000.
Business
It offers insurance products for cars, two-wheelers, commercial vehicles, travel, home, office, personal accident, property, fire, engineering, and marine.
It has also participated in government crop insurance schemes like the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana, covering over 3 million farmers in FY 2016-17
Promoters of IndusInd General Insurance
Originally promoted by Reliance Capital (Anil Ambani's Reliance Group), founded in 2000 as Reliance General Insurance.
After RBI superseded Reliance Capital's board in November 2021 over governance and default issues, the Hinduja Group's IndusInd International Holdings Ltd (IIHL) won the bid for Reliance Capital at ₹9,650 crore, approved by the NCLT.
Post-acquisition, Ashok Hinduja and his family became the new promoters, holding the majority stake (remaining ~1.36% via ESOPs).
The Hindujas have since infused fresh capital (~₹300 crore total, latest ₹100 crore in May 2025) to support the company's solvency.
In short: promotership shifted from the Ambani-led Reliance Group to the Hinduja family (via IIHL).
